IT’S OK TO HAVE JESUS AND A THERAPIST TOO!

written by Hilde White, LMSW

It’s okay to have Jesus and a therapist too. Let me say it louder for those in the back. IT IS OKAY TO HAVE JESUS AND A THERAPIST TOO!

I hear this all the time, “But Jesus is the ‘Wonderful Counselor.’ Why, if you have Him, would you need a therapist?”

As believers sometimes we feel, or have been told, if we need counseling we have failed. We aren’t strong enough in our faith, we aren’t digging deep enough into the scriptures, or worst of all, we are taking power away from our Heavenly Father.

Oh friend, that could not be further from the truth. Mental health is not taboo in scripture. There is a beautiful harmony between theology and therapy that brings holistic healing. There are so many examples of godly men and women seeking godly counsel throughout the Bible. Scriptures which speak of sharing one another’s burdens and seeking out others to walk with through life’s struggles.

Your Heavenly Father does not want you to suffer your burdens alone. He longs for you to thrive. And He knows sometimes that means partnering with people he has gifted as helpers. If you were diabetic you would see a doctor and take insulin. If you had cancer, an oncologist and chemo. Is your mental health any less important? A mental health provider any less gifted by God? Or mental health medication any less life saving than other medication?

The story of scripture from Genesis to Revelation is the story of healing, of restoration. It is not counter to that same scripture to need or seek out help. Your Heavenly Father desires your healing. He invites you to live a life of restoration. We at Living Well would love to walk with you through that process.
